JOHNNY HAN – Director
From his early days in New York, Johnny Han knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. It began by with shooting movies in the garage, with choreographed action scenes and toy cars. And later, with the formal training he received at the acclaimed School of Visual Arts where he earned his BFA. That launched his career as he began work on commercials at Curious Pictures. Four years later, he stepped into the TV world and L.A., as the VFX Lead on the smash superhero series, SMALLVILLE. Demonstrating amazing dedication and innovation, Johnny was nominated 3 times in VES for outstanding VFX, compositing, and digital environments for the show.

Johnny expanded his skills and experience at Sony Pictures Imageworks, one of L.A.’s top VFX shops. He became FX Technical Director on Warners Bros. SUPERMAN RETURNS which was VFX Oscar-nominated. His contributions continued on a diverse range of features including SPIDERMAN 3, BEOWULF and WATCHMEN.
The recognition of Johnny’s artistic and technical achievements led to his position as on-set VFX Supervisor for the Emmy-winning TV show HEROES. This was a highly challenging and all-encompassing role — where he worked one-on-one with directors, DPs, writers and art directors to bring to life grand VFX born of brief words and simple sketches.
Johnny then became VFX Supervisor on the blockbuster 2012. He worked closely with director Roland Emmerich to achieve this larger than life vision.
While in L.A., Johnny also immersed himself in the independent film scene. His endeavours included directing experimental photography work, studies of classic VFX techniques of miniatures and motion control, and art direction for experimental traditional fused with CG animation techniques.

A love for travel more challenge soon brought Johnny to Australia, where his immersion into ground-breaking work continued as the FX Supervisor on LEGENDS OF THE GUARDIANS. Here, Johnny also explored new creative realms and intensively studied and became trained in Method Meisner technique acting, to better understand and work with actors as a director.
Now working at London’s largest and world reputable VFX production house FRAMESTORE, Johnny is a VFX Supervisor and Commercial Director — a natural fit that leverages his extensive history in major studio VFX work, and his comprehensive understanding of the production process. His ongoing creative passion has most recently led to him to direct a Canon commercial for Dentsu which aired globally in February 2012.
